뉴욕 마천루의 역사는 이 건물에서 시작됐다.

1902년 도로 사이에 생긴 삼각형 부지에 세계 최초로 지은 철근콘크리트 건물이자 세계 최초의 20층 건물이다. 2001년 911 테러로 무너진 세계무역센터 자리에는 다시 미국 최고층의 건물이 세워졌고대재앙의 현장에는 인공폭포를 만들었다.

폭포에서 쏟아지는 물은 희생자 유가족의 눈물을 상징한다. 무너진 세계무역센터 쌍둥이 빌딩 자리에 만든 인공폭포 주변에는 희생자의 이름을 새겨뒀다. 희생자의 생일엔 이름 위에 꽃을 꽂아놓는다. 새로 지은 건물은 104층 541미터로 미국 최고층 빌딩이 됐다. 911테러 현장에는 추모박물관이 만들어졌다. 박물관에 들어서자 건물을 받치고 있던 두 개의 철 기둥이 눈에 들어온다.

3천 여 명이 희생되었던 911테러. 시간이 지나도 결코 그들에 대한 기억을 지우지 않겠다는 다짐으로 13년에 걸쳐 만든 추모박물관이다.

죽음을 무릅쓰고 구조 활동을 할 때 사용한 소방차는 당시 긴박했던 상황을 보여준다. 박물관의 중앙 홀에는 몇 가지 의미 있는 기념물이 있다. 제일 먼저 눈에 띄는 것은 깨지지 않은 유리창이다.

“트윈 타워에는 43,600개의 창문이 있었는데 그중 단 한 개만 깨지지 않았어요. 바로 이 창문은 제 창문이었죠. 전 7년간 일하면서 이 창문 밖을 내다보곤 했어요.”

“이게 선생님(사무실)의 창문이었다고요?” “네. 세계 무역 센터 남쪽 건물의 82층이요. 바로 제가 일했던 곳이죠. 건물 정면과 함께 창문들도 다 떨어졌어요.” 테러도 비켜간 행운의 유리창이다. ‘마지막 기둥’이라고 불리는 이 철 기둥은 테러현장 복구를 할 때 정신적 지주역할을 했다. 911테러가 발생하고 9개월 간 진행된 현장 복구 작업에서 가장 마지막에 철거된 건물의 잔해다.

기둥에는 실종자를 찾는 전단지와 가족의 편지. 그리고 현장 복구인력들이 남긴 희생자를 애도하는 글들이 남아있다. “이 마지막 기둥은 실제로 건물 잔해 수거 노력뿐만 아니라 이 기둥이 여전히 서 있었고 건물 붕괴의 영향을 받지 않았다는 사실을 상징하고 있어요. 아주 튼튼했거든요.

미국의 강함을 의미한 거군요. 그렇습니다. 그 기간 내내 지탱하고 있었던 슬러리 윌(지하 연속 벽)과 마찬가지로요. 911 이후에도 잘 지낸 다수의 생존자들처럼 충격을 견디는 힘이 있었고 강했고 살아남았죠.”

911테러의 충격은 가시지 않았지만 재난을 복구하는 과정을 통해 미국인은 하나가 됐다.
